The Best Kind of Teacher

By: Madeline Berryhill

Today is National Teacher’s Day. The woman in the photo is one of the many teachers I had during my time as a grade school student. Her name was Dawn Brockman. She taught leadership and student council, but she was way more than just a teacher. Mrs. Brockman knew how to engage students in her class, but more importantly though she knew how to bring out the best in students that were not yet sure of their potential. She did exactly that for me. I never thought I was worthy enough to get out of shell, but Mrs. Brockman saw something in me and encouraged me to start getting more involved in the school extracurricular activities. My life was changed from that day forward. I started to get more involved and discovered just how much I was capable of doing if I tried. I ended up raising over $1,800 for our school’s philanthropy one year and the next year I was voted chairman for the whole event. The year I was chairman, we raised over $80,000. A total that has not been reached since I held it. And how did all this happen? Because a teacher took much time and effort to show me I had more potential than I realized. Give all the teachers you know some love today! They deserve all of the appreciation!
