Sensory Activities to Help Calm Children

With so many things pulling at our children’s attention these days, over-stimulation is more common than ever. Within the busyness of school, sports, and other activities, sometimes children need time to unwind and process through all that is going on. PBS is a great resource for activities that help children relax.

My personal favorite is the Calming Fingertip Writing Activity. It’s simple, and gives you some calm time with your child. Here’s what you do:

Have your child lie down on their belly on a comfortable flat surface. Smooth their shirt out, then begin tracing letters with your fingertips on their back. Rubbing their back softly helps them to relax. Also have them take some calming deep breaths while you are doing this.

I have found that this activity is great when your child is suffering from an anxious moment and unable to calm down, as well as right before bed.
