Don’t Forget to Spring Forward this Weekend!

By: Lexie Dare

It’s that time already… Daylight savings begins this Sunday! You might be thinking… Is this the one we like or do not like? Unfortunately, we are losing an hour of sleep. Fortunately though, it won’t be dark seemingly as soon as the kids get home from school!

Here are some fun facts to ease the pain of losing an hour and resetting our body clocks:

Daylight Saving Time is actually singular, not plural. Although we have coined it Daylight Savings, the proper name is Daylight Saving.

Daylight Saving Time is not celebrated nationwide. The states of Hawaii and Arizona do not observe Daylight Saving, however the Navajo Nation located inside the state of Arizona does. Now that could get confusing!

Benjamin Franklin suggested the idea…As a joke! He suggested it more than a century before it ever took place as a way to help people save money on candle wax burning.

A bug collector who was frustrated about losing daylight so quickly while searching for bugs gets all the credit for Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving was created to help conserve energy, because it would add more daylight to the evening. If it was brighter longer at night, you would not need to use as much electricity to light your home. However, it has since been proven that Daylight Saving does not help conserve energy.

About 70 countries worldwide participate in Daylight Saving, but not all of the countries start and end on the same days, and some of the countries refer to the time change as “Summer Time”.

We hope these fun facts ease the sting of losing an hour asleep… Just reminder, brighter days are ahead.. Literally!
