Left-Handers Day

Are you among the only 10% of the population who are left-handed?  Happy Left-Hander’s Day! Many studies show lefties are more creative, better in math, and better multi-taskers. You are among famous, smart, and talented company such as Aristotle and Napoleon; Babe Ruth and Joe Frazier; Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney; and Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates. By the way, 4 out of 5 of the Apple founders were, you guessed it, lefties!

I’m a southpaw too.  I’ll just mention a few things my fellow left-handers will relate to, and say congrats to you for hanging in there in a right-handed world.

~ Our hand drags across all our work—sometimes smearing and always leaving the gray pinkie.  Gel pens are fun for right-handed people, but for us—a mess!

~ Spiral notebooks and 3-ring binders—come on…the struggle is real!

~ Our arms always hang off our right-handed desks while writing in school—no rest for the lefties.

~ Scissors are better now than when I started school; however, back in the day, they just chewed the paper for left-handed students.  This probably forced most of us to use them right handed.

~ If you’ve ever been asked to serve punch at an event, you know that the ladles’ pour spouts are designed for our right-handed friends. Yes, you might as well trade jobs with someone, because this tool is not going to work for you.

God was even intentional in pointing out people who were left-handed.  There’s an interesting story in the Bible about a left-handed Benjamite named Ehud.  He went and killed the fat king of Moab, King Eglon. The Israelites then defeated Moab and brought peace to Israel for 8 years. The details of this story are quite comical. You’ll enjoy reading it in Judges 3:12-20.  Also in Judges, I found mention of 700 chosen men who were left-handed “each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss” Judges 20:16.  Oh, the accuracy of the southpaw.

Cheers to you, my fellow Lefties! Enjoy your day and celebrate your uniqueness!
