In God We Trust

In God We Trust

“In God We Trust” was established as the United States’ motto in 1956. Since then, the motto has been inscribed on all the United States currency. Are individuals in the United States still okay with “In God We Trust” being the motto? A joint poll that was offered by USA Today, CNN and Gallup depicted that 90% of United States citizens support the motto and currency inscription.

I read an article recently about Alabama school officials attempting to bring the “In God We Trust” motto into the public school system. Naturally, there have been many critics against such an attempt. I recognize that allowing the motto to be displayed in public schools could be seen as a violation of the separation of church and state. The amendment to the constitution exists to state that, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Essentially, government officials must remain neutral toward the subject of religion in legislature to respect the multiple belief systems that exist.

Lawmakers in Alabama have allowed for the national motto to be displayed on public property. Let us put emphasis on the word “allowed.” Lawmakers are allowing the public display of “In God We Trust,” but are not requiring the display of the national motto. Because the public display of the motto is not required, it does not seem to violate any clauses associated with the separation of church and state legislation. Not to mention, should not the display of a nationally supported motto be allowed anyway?

I believe that allowing the national motto to be displayed in public places supports national unity first and foremost. I also think it allows people to ponder our nation’s history being deeply rooted in Christianity without forcing our nation’s students to be influenced by Christian beliefs, therefore; not violating separation of church and state legislation. My prayer is that by allowing our nation’s motto to be displayed in public schools, students might begin to wonder about a relationship with Jesus Christ and find salvation. Join me in prayer as we see “In God We Trust” displayed more widely.
