Chile Report 2016

2016 Summary

After years of rejection from urban schools in the Santiago Metroplex the program had a huge breakthrough in 2016.  Mid-term elections ushered in a wave of conservative mayors which endorsed the program.  As a result, 29,000 students in the Santiago Metroplex are slated to begin using the program in 2017.  This will have impact on rural schools as well, which tend to follow the lead of the larger schools in the metroplex.  Thus, the number of students with new textbooks in 2017 is expected to exceed 36,000.

The pressure to perform in a hostile socialist environment produced a solution that changed how the ministry operates in all countries and provided a powerful solution for the US market.  School evaluations and on demand printing has become our new norm made possible by improved printing technology that allows schools to print lessons, one lesson at a time.  Even though it is more costly than large volume offset printing it allows each school to have a custom designed curriculum build by an algorithm using results from a school evaluation and numerous lessons on file.

School Program 2016

(The Chilean school year is March – December)

Students

4038 – Students with new textbooks

17,963 – Students with used textbooks/3 years aver. duty cycle

39,609 – Students w/o textbooks but whose teachers have a been certified and have texts††

61,610   Total Students

This number is confirmed because schools contract for training to support the program even though they recycle textbooks.

This number is not confirmed but an estimate, based on the number of teachers certified in the program whose school did not purchase textbooks or use recycled textbook.  In this case the teacher uses her copy as a guide for the class.

Adults

179 – Teachers Certified

   980 – Parents Trained

1,150   Total Adults

Schools

21 Total number of schools served with new textbooks

History – In March of 2014 Madam President Michelle Bachelet took office, a self-described agnostic and member of the Socialist Party of Chile.  Her policies have been extremely liberal.  She moved to eliminate “God” in all forms and references from the public sector.  Although the team at Mission Generation anticipated her victory and the head winds which would follow, they were taken back by the speed of her administration’s sweeping social changes.

US funding allowed the program to be accredited under the previous conservative administration.  Unfortunately, the program and all texts were required to be reevaluated under the Bachelet administration which delayed operations, increased cost, and reduced school participation.  The program lost the entire sales cycle of 2015/2016 waiting on government approval which required costly reedits to the program.

A solution was twofold:

  1. School Evaluation – A comprehensive questionnaire is given to students and teachers. The results are fed to an algorithm we produced that identifies students at risk as well as school wide challenges.  Using hundreds of lessons on file, the algorithm custom designs a curriculum to meet an indyuvial school’s challenges.  A custom engineered program for each school allowed the program to side step most of the legal hurdles and at the same time provide a valued service.
  1. On Demand Printing – A custom program required lessons to be printed on demand in the schools using high end laser printers with full bleed capacity. Weekly lessons are downloaded as needed.  This allows the program to stay very fluid which means staying ahead of swiftly changing laws.  Lessons are changed as needed eliminating the danger of having outdated, irrelative or even “illegal” inventory.

Projected Participation in 2017

15,000 Students – Puente Alto

10,000 Students – La Florida

  4,000 Students – Independencia

29,000 Students – Santiago Metroplex (Based on existing pre-contracts)

4,184 Students – Arica

480 Students – Iquique

130 Students – Calama

68 Students – Antofagast

198 Students – Copiapo

450 Students – La Serena

380 Students – Coquimbo

431 Students – Concepcion

   789 Students – Los Angeles

7,110 Students – Rural areas (Based on anticipated contracts with schools currently using the program)

This is a total of 36,110 Students with new textbooks in 2017 (This does not include schools with extended sales cycle.) †††

††† The sales cycle in the Santiago Metroplex starts in November.  The sales cycle for the rest of the country starts in late February.  Classes using our material start later in the school year which gives our teams time to promote the program after school starts.

Chaplain Program

News of the success of the chaplain program in Bolivia has reached Chile.  As a result, schools mostly in the southern regions of the country have requested the program.  It is a huge opportunity.  Engagement depends on US funding efforts.
