Teaching Values to Students Changes What They do at Home

The majority of the students attending the school I work at, come from nontraditional homes generally being raised by either a single mom or a relative.  Parents and guardians are so busy making a living they have very little time for their children.  This is why it is so very important for schools to teach young people traditional family values; how to treat each other and themselves.  What they learn in school they take home.

The Mission Generation textbooks have given me and other teachers the tools we need to build lasting value in the lives of our students.  The textbooks make it easy to address very difficult issues at home and in school setting young people up for success in all areas of their life.

Mission Generation has helped me change the way I teach.  I used to tell the children “No” or “Don’t” all the time but I have learned that there is a better way.  Applying the examples given in the textbook. I now use very positive examples to enrich children.  It is not about right or wrong or even good or bad.  I learned those are opinions and the children resented me imposing my values on them.  Instead I ask them, “Does that behavior lead to life or to death?”  It is amazing how fast students change when they take ownership of their decisions.

The textbooks also teach on nutrition and caring for your body.  Parents have started sending more fruits and vegetables with their kids to school as a result.  Here at school we have been doing our best to do the same to develop good food habits contributing to better health.  It’s been amazing to be part of the metamorphosis of so many young children.  I have advised other schools that if they want healthy, successful children to use Mission Generation’s program.  ~ Gloria Peña
